The colonial history of Readington Township, N.J., is the basis for much of the area's charm. Old York Road, a much used passage between Philadelphia and New York during the Revolutionary War, runs through Readington; the village of Centerville was a common resting point halfway through the journey. The villages of Readington have developed over the years as centers of trade in a large, spread-out farming community. Today, villages such as Whitehouse, Whitehouse Station, Stanton, Oldwick, Centerville and Three Bridges are quiet, family-oriented communities with the gorgeous architecture of days past. A drive through Readington will provide glimpses of historic folk, colonial, romantic and Victorian homes. At over 48 square miles, Readington is the largest township in Hunterdon County. It is bordered by Somerset County on the east, as well as Raritan, Tewksbury and Clinton Townships. The population of Readington is about 16,000. Public education in the elementary and middle grades is provided by Readington Township Schools. The district manages four schools: one in central Readington, two in Whitehouse and one in Three Bridges. High school students attend either Hunterdon Central Regional High School in Flemington or North Hunterdon Regional High School in Annandale. For recreation, the township organizes sports leagues, seasonal programs and classes through its parks and recreation department. Sports programs include basketball, soccer, lacrosse, roller hockey and martial arts.
